The Smyrna Surfari Club has been
awarding annual scholarships to local surfer/scholars since 1980.
What started as single
scholarship changed to a two scholarship program 15 years ago. This year
$3000 will be awarded, $2000 for the "Surfari" scholarship and $1000 for the
Wayne Peck Memorial scholarship (Wayne, who was a well liked member and the club
treasurer, passed away several years ago). The total amount of awards varies
from one year to the next. Annual club income from its fund raising efforts,
membership dues, sale of merchandise and surfboard raffle tickets, less club
expenses (club house rent, contest expenses, insurance, etc), equals the amount
of money awarded each year.
The club's scholarship program was established to support young surfers
wanting to continue their studies beyond high school. While most of our winners
have used their awards to help fund college, others choose to fund training in
such fields as firefighting or law enforcement. That's fine with us.
We award our scholarships based on academic performance, involvement in
the sport of surfing, and financial need. Academic performance is not just
GPA's, we look at the level of courses completed. A student's involvement in
community service is also weighed in their favor. Participation in the sport of
surfing is about more than just contest results, we look at the overall impact
the sport has had on the student and his/her family. Financial need is also
considered, we want to get the biggest bang for our buck, so to speak. Weighing
these three factors equally helps us pick the best of the best. We are proud of
all the young women and men who have won our scholarships these past years.
This year marks the 28th year the Smyrna Surfari Club has awarded scholarships to students who worked hard to
make the grades while surfing the waves. Abaco Schweizer and Stephanie Rogers, our 2006 scholarship winners, did both. Way to go dudes, we Surfari's are proud of you.
